A beautiful widow

by M&B on May 15, 2013

The other evening we were able to spend time with one of our closest friends.

A few minutes into being at their home we noticed that her grandmother was sitting in a chair fast asleep.

We had never met her grandmother before and could not believe she was there.

She is in her 90′s and has been a widow since her early 20′s.  She grew up being Tibetan married a Naxi (One of China’s minority groups)  man and then learned the new language and culture and took on the traditional dress style, which she still wears to this day.  After her husband died in the war, no one would marry her because she had two young girls, and hence couldn’t produce boys, therefore she was not wanted.  She told us that her mother in law taught her to smoke (which she still does to this day) to handle the stress of losing her husband while so young and raising two girls on her own in a culture that was not truly her own.  She speaks a little Mandarin, but still uses the Naxi language and local dialect in her every day life.  Since most of her teeth are gone it is hard for even her family to understand her, but she seemed to dialogue a lot with them all when we were there.

She loved playing with and feeding Aila, along with showing us the different parts of her traditional clothing.

When I got to take a picture with her she moved in close to see me (she is blind in one eye) and I said to her in Mandarin – You are so beautiful! That she understood and she started to laugh, as did the entire family and then proceeding to tell me that no one in her whole life has ever called her beautiful… she was a young widow with two small girls… no one would ever have told her she was beautiful… but she was so beautiful!

What an evening we will cherish for a long, long time.

Aila’s Tree…

by M&B on April 29, 2013

Here is the final tree.

027

Having 39 leaves on the tree and raising $610USD, Aila’s fundraiser is now complete.

Thank you again to all who supported her in her first fundraiser!

We look forward to seeing this scroll hang in the girl’s room to welcome her ‘big sister’.  It will be a constant reminder to us all of your love and support of us, and the reminder that LOVE will always cause beautiful things to blossom in someone’s life.

An ancient…

April 21, 2013

The most beautiful part of living in China is definitely the people. The babies with their open bottom pants, the toddlers in the squeaky shoes, the primary school kids in their red scarves, the middle school students just as awkward as any in any country, the young adults dressed to impress, the working parents rushing [...]

A good year to be a 2 year old!

April 9, 2013

On April 3rd Aila turned 2! Here are a few photos of her close to her birthday and on her birthday to celebrate this big event: Part of most afternoons we spend a little time ‘reading in the sun’.  I found her like this one day, all her own doing. A moment caught from our [...]

April 4, 2013

Thank you to all who have donated a leaf to Aila’s Fundraiser! So far, we have 23 ‘leaves’ on the tree… and a few more to put on in the next round of painting soon. This is such a fun activity to be doing together – learning to paint, stamping, mixing colors, getting messy, having [...]

Aila’s Fundraiser

April 2, 2013

We are having our first family fundraiser! Aila is turning 2 on Wednesday and has been feeling quite left out of all the fingerprinting that papa and mama have had to do for the adoption clearances. So this first fundraiser is all her idea! Here is the tree we have created for Aila’s sister. As [...]

Adoption for us…

March 26, 2013

We are really amazed at the deep and beautiful changes that adoption has already done in our hearts. Mostly, we are amazed that there are thousands and thousands of little ones all over the world that wake up and are not greeted by a parent, or close relatives, with a smile… They are not embraced, [...]

Village life…

March 22, 2013

Our good friends went to visit one of their hometowns during the most recent Spring Festival. Although we couldn’t go with them this time, we thought you might enjoy some of the photos from their trip – just to see another small town and village here in Yunnan Province. She is a great photographer and [...]

The bike against the bus…

March 15, 2013

I began the day on a good note.  I went outside to my usual spot to wait either for the bus or a black taxi (this means an illegal or unregistered taxi which is usually a van, not denoting the color, they are actually mostly grey).  I arrived in my spot right near our house [...]

Lady with fancy shoes that were too big!

March 9, 2013

Yesterday we were walking around Green Lake.  It is a lovely place with lots and lots of Russian speaking seagulls (they come down for the nice weather on there way to who knows where).  As we walked around we were behind a family.  The lady in front of us was dressed up and had nice [...]
